If you've played PlanetSide, you've seen the effect before. It fills in around you as you move, looking at first like a cloud passing in front of the sun, as the ground darkens with grass and bushes. The visuals have been the subject of some controversy lately, but the weakness of the rendering doesn't get much worse than a lack of vegetation in the distance plenty of trees, but no foliage close to the ground.

There's also some pretty good ambient sound and music, random overheard conversations, and solid combat sound effects. But here, everyone sounds like they actually do this kind of thing for a living. It matters a lot in a story-based game, and it's often not very good. I haven't recognized any other voices I've come across, but this aspect of the game is pretty well done, in my opinion. It's all right, though, because he's voiced by Patrick Stewart. You start out quickly, getting sprung from prison by no less than Emperor Septim himself, although it isn't quite clear why he chose you. (On a side note, the Morrwind ESCS does not work with Oblivion.) But its trappings will be familiar to anyone who's played an RPG in the past ten years.

Keep in mind, however, that only the PC version has the Elder Scrolls Construction Set, which you can download from Bethesda's official site. As with Morrowind, Oblivion is a demanding game. If you have a 360 and a video card that's less powerful than a 6800GT or Radeon X850, I would recommend getting the 360 version.

The 360 version of Oblivion does both HDR and AA and runs natively at 1280x720. Load times are faster on the PC, but the visuals are about equal. Bethesda recently announced that the PC version of ES4 cannot have both HDR and AA, but it looked quite nice with just HDR. Oblivion auto-detected the settings at Ultra High, albeit at 1024x768, with no anti-aliasing. He has a Dell XPS Gen 4 with a GeForce 7800GTX, 3.4GHz P4, 2GB of PC3200 RAM and some SATA hard drives. We ran it on Dan's machine, since mine decided to start my week by crapping out on me. This is the first time I've actually laid eyes on the game, aside from the previous batches of screenshots and video clips. But it's finally on our desks, in our computers, and inside our heads, and we're here to give you a taste before Bethesda and 2K Games unleash Oblivion on the retail channel for both the PC and the 360. I've been looking forward to ES4 more than any game since Half-Life 2 - and that's a lot of games to wade through in the mean time.
